Vermont Debate Academy

The Vermont Debate Academy is a free program aimed at high school students in and around Vermont. The day program will train students in public speaking, argumentation, persuasion and other skills that are useful in debating. There will be lectures, exercises, drills and a number of practice debates.

The first two days will provide an introduction to the World Schools Debating Championship format. Because this is on the weekend teachers and coaches are invited to learn about this exciting debate format during these two days. The National Forensic League (now the National Speech & Debate Association) is promoting this format and will expand it in the future, probably to a national level event. This year NFL will host a major tournament in this format during the NFL Nationals in Overland Park, Kansas.

All days will feature debates and hands-on instruction.

While more faculty will be added, so far we have:

Drew Adamczyk, US Universities semifinalist 2013.

Mariel Golden, finalist, North American Universities Debate Championship, 2013.

Dillon McConnell, President, Lawrence Debate Union.

Isabella Olson, Pan American Universities semifinalist 2014.

John Sadek, US Universities semifinalist, and Top Judge 2013.

Becca White, former Vermont state champion, champion at Vienna & Budapest Opens 2013, now Women’s Officer for World Debating Council.

We are in the process of raising funds to help needy students acquire housing in the Burlington area during the program. Check back for application forms as we get closer to the program.
